{"id":8,"date":"2004-05-01T07:00:00","date_gmt":"2004-04-30T21:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/family.ellerman.id.au\/blog\/?p=8"},"modified":"2007-10-17T15:47:00","modified_gmt":"2007-10-17T05:47:00","slug":"china-may-2004","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/family.ellerman.id.au\/blog\/2004\/05\/01\/china-may-2004\/","title":{"rendered":"China  &#8211; May 2004"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kath and Pete spent two and a half fascinating, eye-opening weeks in China, basing ourselves in Beijing with Kym and Sue, but making forays outwards in various directions.Highlights were <strong>Chengde<\/strong> where the emperors had a summer palace but also had built many temples in the style of their various subjugated peoples. <strong>Pingyao<\/strong> (by overnight train!) and the Wang family mansion, <strong>Xian<\/strong> and the Entombed Warriors (another overnight train) were also highlights. We also did a fantastic nine-kilometre walk along the <strong>Great Wall<\/strong> from Jinshanling to Simatai with views over the rugged hills and amazing ridge-top battlements on a glorious day.<\/p>\n<p>Naturally we saw many of the highlights of <strong>Beijing<\/strong> as well, including the forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, the Temple of Heaven and the Summer Palace, and we loved the markets, but we may have let the side down on the shopping front! Our last few days were spent in <strong>Suzhou<\/strong> with its world-heritage-listed gardens, and <strong>Shanghai<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201d what an amazingly dynamic city!
